Here's exactly what working with Mahoney Road looks like — from your first survey to your Business Exit Readiness Report and beyond.
15 diagnostic questions. No documents. No financials. Results delivered immediately.
This is not open-ended consulting. Every engagement follows a defined process with clear milestones, specific deliverables, and a fixed timeline — so you always know where you are and what's coming next.
Every engagement follows the same five phases — each with a clear purpose, specific deliverables, and a live advisory session to work through what we're finding together. The work is designed to fit around the demands of running a business, not add to them. Here is exactly what that looks like.
Every Mahoney Road engagement moves through five phases. Here is what each one involves and what it produces.
Phase One
The engagement begins with the Initial Exit Readiness Survey — a diagnostic assessment that captures the foundational signals buyers and lenders use to evaluate acquisition risk. This is not a generic business questionnaire. Every question is mapped to one of the seven Strategic Dimensions that drive due diligence outcomes: Financial Integrity, Operational, Team and Leadership, Customer Stability, Compliance and Risk, Growth Infrastructure, and Transferability.
Your responses immediately generate a scored readiness profile — a first, unvarnished picture of where your business stands from a buyer and lender perspective. That profile becomes the foundation for everything that follows. It identifies where the risks are concentrated, what the most critical gaps are, and where the engagement needs to go deepest.
What this establishes
Phase Two
Before you get on the phone, Melisa has already reviewed your results. This is not a discovery call or a sales conversation. It is a prepared, substantive discussion about what your readiness profile actually means — where your risks are concentrated, what the gap between your current state and buyer and lender expectations looks like, and what it would take to close that gap.
We discuss your goals and timeline, confirm which engagement track aligns with your business and situation, and make sure you have a clear, honest picture of where you stand. If the timing is not right or the fit is not there, we will tell you directly. There is no obligation to proceed.
What this establishes
Phase Three
This is where the real work happens. Working through each phase, you answer focused questions and provide key documents across the areas buyers and lenders examine most closely — your finances, your operations, your team, your customers, your legal standing, and how well the business can run without you. Each phase builds on what came before it, following the same sequence a buyer's due diligence process would follow.
Before each live session, Melisa reviews everything submitted and prepares thoroughly. Sessions are never used to catch up on paperwork. They are reserved for the harder conversations — what the findings actually mean, what risks you may not be able to see from inside the business, and what to prioritize. Some questions may require follow-up. When they do, it is because the picture is not yet complete — and an incomplete picture is exactly what buyers use against you.
Alongside the assessment, you build a document foundation — the core materials any serious buyer will request. These are not generic checklists. They are the specific documents that allow diligence to move forward cleanly, or expose the gaps that slow it down.
What this builds
Phase Four
The report is not assembled from templates. It is built from everything the engagement uncovered — every response, every document, every finding across every session. Every dimension is scored. Every gap is ranked by impact. Every recommendation is sequenced. The preparation is thorough, deliberate, and specific to your business.
Your Business Exit Readiness Report is the most complete, documented picture of your business from a buyer and lender perspective that has ever existed. It shows where your business is strong, where it is exposed, and exactly what needs to change — in the order that produces the greatest impact before you go to market.
The report includes a 0–100 Readiness Score across all seven dimensions, a detailed gap analysis, and a Three-Tier Strategic Roadmap: Quick Wins that create immediate impact, Foundation-Building work that addresses structural risk, and Strategic Positioning recommendations that strengthen your competitive position as a target.
The report surfaces both sides of the picture. It identifies where risks are hiding and what needs to change — but it also documents where your business is genuinely strong. Most owners have built more than they realize. The report names those strengths explicitly, because a buyer who can see what is working is a more confident buyer — and a more confident buyer is one who closes.
The score is not a verdict. It is a starting point with a clear path forward — and the documented evidence to back it up.
What this delivers
Phase Five
Receiving the report is the beginning of the work that matters most — implementing the recommendations that will actually change how your business looks to a buyer. The engagement is built to support that momentum, not just hand you a document and disappear.
Two included momentum calls maintain continuity after delivery. The first focuses on your quick wins — the highest-impact, fastest-to-implement items in your action plan. The second reviews your progress on the deeper fixes and provides a broader check on where you stand relative to your readiness goals. Both calls are designed to keep you moving, answer questions that surface during implementation, and help you recalibrate priorities as you learn more about your business through the lens of a buyer.
The improvements most clients make after the report do not just move them closer to a successful sale. They make the business stronger, cleaner, and easier to operate right now — which is its own return on the investment, regardless of when the sale happens.
What this sustains
We understand that sharing financial records, organizational documents, and operational details requires trust. Here is how we protect it.
A Non-Disclosure Agreement is executed as part of every client engagement. Before any sensitive information changes hands, your confidentiality is contractually protected.
Everything you share — financial records, operational materials, client information, business documentation — is used solely to conduct your engagement. It is never shared with third parties.
Your documents and engagement materials are stored securely and accessible only to the people directly involved in your engagement. Your information does not circulate beyond your project.
Mahoney Road provides exit readiness advisory services only. We do not share client information with buyers, brokers, lenders, or any outside parties. Ever.
Every engagement produces a set of concrete deliverables that did not exist before you started — a documented, buyer-lens picture of your business and the tools to strengthen it.
A complete readiness analysis with your 0–100 score across all seven dimensions, flagged risks, gap analysis, and a three-tier prioritized action plan.
Your core due diligence baseline documents — organized, accessible, and ready. Foundations clients receive the Essential 5. Optimization clients receive the Critical 10.
A consultant-reviewed written summary after every live session — capturing key findings, decisions made, and next steps so nothing is lost between sessions.
A template for capturing the operational knowledge that lives in your head — the access, processes, and relationships a new owner needs to keep the business running from day one.
Two included follow-up calls to review implementation progress and maintain momentum on your action plan after report delivery.
The Initial Exit Readiness Survey establishes your baseline across all seven areas of the engagement — and gives you your results the moment you submit. It's the starting point for everything that follows.
